Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for hours when dozens of them floated into the country's airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to 30 flight cancellations impacting 6,000 passengers, with officials warning that delays might continue throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that twenty-five weather balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the adjacent country of Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the aviation facility.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's main urban center and near the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have now been retrieved, though additional discoveries are expected, according to border security officials.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over numerous instances in which smuggled items were delivered from its border nation utilizing the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is especially affected by weather factors rather than simpler to operate drones, representatives elaborated that "Weather devices are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are less expensive than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The objective of our agencies is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and involved individuals so that this activity become unprofitable and do not pose risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
The recent incidents occur during an era marked by growing anxiety in Europe following various aerial device infiltrations that have created aviation problems across European nations.
Similar occurrences in neighboring countries have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout the region.
